We delivered a great-looking responsive website with content management for the original and best purveyor of organised stag and hen weekends in Barcelona.
A design refresh and some content challenges
BarcelonaAdventure are the original and best organisers of stag and hen weekends in Barcelona and have justifiably built a solid reputation for putting together exciting and exquisitely well run packages for their clients.
Their old web site was beginning to creak under the weight of content added to the site over the years, and was also no longer responding to the company’s business needs. Towards the end of 2014 Dave and Jeremy (the guys at Barcelona Adventure) felt that it was time to revisit the design and breathe some new life into the site.
The previous site was a simple static build, but it was clear that the continual addition of new activities to their portfolio along with the high frequency of anticipated content changes meant that a content management solution was a must for them this time around.
Site analysis and project planning
We started out by looking at the site’s existing content and working out what was working well, and isolating those elements that weren’t performing well. We looked at the user statistics available to us (via Google Analytics) and could see pretty quickly that there were a huge number of blog pages that were ranking very poorly and that were just adding unnecessary bloat to the site. We decided to focus on the key, high value pages and worked towards a leaner, more streamlined and efficient site.
The aim was to also refresh the overall visual style, but without heading off on a full redesign. With this in mind we worked on some minor changes to existing styles and the addition of a few newer style ideas. Principal changes were the new typography for the wordmark and the site headers, a consolidation of the company’s colour scheme and a tightening up of the header and footer of the site. We also introduced a large hero image section on each of the activity pages to allow Barcelona Adventure to make good use of photography that they had acquired from previous client weekends and activities.
For a project of this scope, one of our favourite content management systems is Perch. It’s fast and very complete but most importantly it’s very intuitive and straightforward for the end-user to work with. And for this size of project, it’s a perfect fit.
With many of their clients on short stays in Barcelona, mobile usage on this site is fairly high and so it is important that the site is responsive and fast. That’s the kind of work we like and we worked on getting good page performance. Good performance can make or break a web project and we’re pleased to say that this site is pretty fast.
Good results and user engagement
The site launched towards the end of 2014 and results have been positive, with an upturn in business generated via the web site and with the site statistics pointing to much improved user engagement.
